Update-April 2008
The dust and chaos of construction are a fading memory. First United’s members and staff now enjoy updated facilities and well-lit, open gathering spaces, the result of a capital campaign undertaken in 2006. Of equal importance, the lower level areas of the church that houses the PADS program and walk-in ministry are water-tight, warm and secure.

The 2.4 million dollar renovation of the building meets modern fire codes, creates adequate space for the congregation to gather informally, consolidates the majority of the church offices in a single, air-conditioned unit, adds sorely needed meeting rooms, updates Centennial Hall, creates library space, reconfigures the parking lot entrances to the building and allows staff to supervise activity within major parts of the building from their offices. The chapel has a new roof and is now handicapped accessible as is the remainder of the church. |

The current building dates from 1917 when it was rebuilt following a disastrous fire. It underwent significant reconfiguration in the 1960s which resulted in the creation of church school rooms, a modern kitchen and dining facility and church offices. But ongoing leaks in the structure resulted in a frequently damp (sometimes wet!) lower level. The solution was to seal the structure and build out over the existing lower-level roof creating new, much needed gathering space. |

A planning committee of church members spent three years surveying the congregation regarding their needs and refining the congregation’s vision for renovated space. Architects and construction experts within the congregation contributed their considerable skills. As the plan was presented a capital campaign was begun. Construction began in July of 2006 and, as is common in older buildings, involved some surprises. The discovery that a rusting steel beam supported the ceiling of Centennial Hall slowed the pace of renovation and required adjustment to construction plans. |

A long forgotten fireplace was discovered as an opening was created for handicapped access to the chapel. December of ’06 brought an unanticipated peek at the new space for those attending Christmas Eve services—a Christmas present of sorts! A major celebration occurred in February of ’07 as the congregation moved into its new space and rededicated it ministry and mission in the coming years.
While the major expenses of construction and furnishing have been met though the capital campaign drive, the church is actively seeking contributions to meet the remaining unfunded costs which approximate $360,000.
