Where do I go when I get to church?

The main entrance to the sanctuary is through the front doors off of Lake Street, though many people also come in the back entrance off the parking lot through the church lounge.

There is a wheelchair ramp on the west side of church facing Kenilworth Avenue. There are greeters at the front door and the Kenilworth entrance who are glad to answer any questions you may have once you arrive. There is also an elder available in the church lounge who can offer information about First United Church of Oak Park.

Are children welcome in worship?

Because First United worships as a community, children of all ages are welcome in worship. Worship each week includes a children’s sermon (Time for Sharing), and age-appropriate activities are available from ushers to help children focus during the longer stretches of the sermon.

In the back of the sanctuary are a rocking chair and soft toys should a young child need calming during worship.

Should you choose, your young child(ages 0-6 years) can participate in worship until Time for Sharing is complete, and then you can escort your child to the nursery until worship is done.

What if I have nursery-aged children?

Our nursery is staffed by professional child caregivers and volunteers each week from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., that is during the education hour as well as during worship. The space is cheerful, clean and well-stocked with toys and games for very young children.

What if I have a hearing or sight impairment?

The ushers will gladly give you a hearing aid to use during the service. There are also large-print bulletins and hymnals available for the service.

Are there rules about who can participate in taking Holy Communion?

You don’t have to be Presbyterian or United Church of Christ or even a member of a church to participate in the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. There is no age requirement. All are welcome.
