Children & Youth (Church School)

Church School classes are available for children and youth:

Classes meet from 9:30-10:45 a.m. on Sundays and include music each week. Church School meets from September through early June. There is a directory in the church so the classes can be easily located.

First United provides weekly church school for children 0-14 years of age. What you see in church school rooms may look the same. Children in rooms. Adults and senior high youth with them. Rooms with tables. Rooms with chairs. What happens with those children in those rooms is the same. And different too. On a Sunday in May, you would have seen our Kindergarten class enact all seven days of Creation. A firmament, sky, sun, moon, stars, plants, fish, animals, Adam and Eve-all created, all blessed, all good. And suddenly, all the animals and people and plants and sky collapse in a pile and rest-Sabbath. Many children read about creation. Here they bring it to life.

Junior High youth learn firsthand about the situation in Colombia from a First United youth who accompanied a mission trip. Fourth Graders learn about Communion and bake bread to serve in worship on a Communion Sunday. Our very youngest with an adult participate in a God’s Children Sing program each week. Our children and youth explore the Bible, pray together and serve the world.

Each week our classes encounter a different passage of the Bible. In their time in our church school, they encounter the full range of the Bible, Old and New Testament, as well as participate in mission activities throughout the year. Nurturing the spiritual life of children and youth takes a variety of forms: art, conversation, drama, play, lectio divina, music. And in the center of all this action and stillness hovers spirit. Holy Spirit. And a healthy dose of divine silliness. And community.
